We cannot believe that we have been out here on the street in Orange County for 4 years protesting the war and occupation in Iraq! We are certainly NOT celebrating our 4th anniversary. Nonetheless, we were thrilled to see so many of our current and past Code Pinkers all present for this special commemoration vigil. Over the past 4 years so many things have happened in our lives, and now we really are a family - a family for peace!

We were thrilled to have a large number of women from many different groups join us in solidarity to celebrate International Woman’s Day!

We joined many other protesters, including members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) from Orange County to protest the worst president in US history. We even served “im-PEACH-ment” pie rather than the traditional cherry or apple pie!

Anti-War Protest in Hollywood

March 20, 2005 marked the two-year anniversary of the U.S. bombing and invasion of Iraq. After all of the death and destruction and with the Bush administration claiming a mandate to continue their war, we joined a new urgency with a stronger determination within the global antiwar movement to bring the troops home now.

Code Pink OC joined other Code Pink activists from Los Angeles, Long Beach, and southern California for a huge pink presence at the protest in Hollywood.

It was exhilarating to march with so many other Code Pinkers, while many people cheered us on!

Action #2: Santa Ana Court House Counter-Coronation

Code Pink OC reconvened at 11 A.M. at the Ronald Reagan Courthouse in Santa Ana, joining up with the Orange County Peace Coalition, the Orange County Veterans for Peace, and others. We then marched to the Civic Center before departing for the biggest and best event protest of the day in LA.

Action #1: Huntington Beach Banner Drop
We started out the day at 7 AM on a pedestrian overpass over the 405 Fwy near Warner Ave. with Code Pink Long Beach joining us. We remained for over one hour during the morning rush hour. As usual, we received a large number of positive and negative responses. At the end of the banner drop, we left 2 signs as our "freeway blog". Unfortunately, they were immediately seen by the CHP, and were quickly removed by Caltrans. Many thanks to OC Code Pink member Leslie, who along with myself, Stephanie, the 2 Kathy's and Susan, (all from LB Code Pink) for accomplishing a successful anti-inaugural protest. Since we had our banner and many signs, we were able to face both the northbound and southbound traffic lanes for maximum visibility.

Buy Nothing Bomb Nothing Day! (11-26-04)

On November 26th, the biggest shopping day of the year, OC Code Pink gathered with Long Beach Code Pink, Veterans for Peace, and other anti-war activists at Newport Beach's Fashion Island. All in all there were about 50 of us walking through the mall with our shopping bags denouncing the war and passing out flyers encouraging people to curb their consumption.

Election Eve Banner Drop (11-1-04)

Huntington Beach Banner Drop
We were on the pedestrian overpass near Warner Ave. for a full hour until darkness fell. The large number of positive responses of honks, waves, and thumbs up was truly amazing for OC! We were totally stoked and are very optimistic for the election tomorrow! Several CHP motorcycle cops drove under us, but none approached us. A traffic heliocopter circled above us for over 10 minutes, and we were even on the traffic report! A CHP motorcycle cop parked on the shoulder beneath us shouting orders from his loudspeaker (none of which we could understand) until he finally drove off. The use of a pedestrian overpass is really good, and we should remember to use them! Since we had two banners, we were able to face both the northbound and southbound lanes, significantly slowing traffic in both directions.

Downey Banner Drop (10-29-04)

Our banner drop on Friday off the 105 Fwy at Woodruff in Downey was the best yet! We stayed there for about 75 minutes until 6:30 pm when darkness fell. And even though 2 cop cars drove by us on Woodruff and one CHP cop car drove under our overpass on the 105 Fwy, no cops stopped to hassle us at all! We were stoked! We also were joined by about 6 people from the LB chapter of "Grassroots for Kerry". They brought their own signs and their enthusiasm. We thank them as well.

Cerritos Banner Drop (10-25-04)

Reporting on our successful banner drop done today off an overpass on the 605 Fwy in Cerritos. There were 5 of us. We were able to fly our banner and signs for about 45 minutes un-impeded until (only) two LA County Sheriffs arrived. The first officer was friendly for about 30 seconds until we asked him if we could hold the banner for 10 more minutes (until 6 pm). Then he got macho and ordered us to leave immediately or he would arrest us. As usual, he said we were creating a hazard and could cause an accident. So we left peacefully. He then became nice again and thanked us for following his directions. We even think he said "Go Kerry".

Long Beach/Signal Hill banner Drop (10-8-04)

We attempted our very first banner drop on a 405 Freeway overpass. After about 25 mins, a Signal Hill police officer (and I use the term "officer"very loosely) showed up and told us we could not hold up our banner. As our discussion with him ensured, a CHP officer arrived, followed by 3 more cops. Imagine that ... 3 Code Pink ladies so threatening, that they needed reinforcements, a ratio of 5 to 3! They threatened us with arrest and taking away our banner if we did not leave at once. Traffic slowed down considerably and even more cars honked for us when they saw the 5 cop cars with flashing lights hassling us!!!
So we had no choice but to leave, after only about 30 mins. We asked to speak to the supervising officer, and about 15 mins later one arrived on a motorcycle. Two ladies also happened to come by and gave us great support! We want to thank them!!! A Long Beach Code Pinker also arrived and was ready to assist by making calls for us if needed. We are ready for another banner drop!

LA Banner Drop (9-15-04)

These are pictures of our very first banner drop in LA with Code Pink LA activists. It was great to meet some of the founders of Code Pink. One of them was one of several Code Pink women who managed to sneak into the RNC, verbally protest, and then consequently get dragged out and arrested. The toes of her shoes were totally scuffed when they dragged her out. It was an honor to meet her and to tell her that we are very proud of her!

Three of us decided to attend an anti-war protest in Santa Monica in solidarity with the massive anti-war protest that was occurring simultaneously in NYC before the start of the RNC. It was there that we met several Code Pink members from LA. And it was that very day that the three of us decided to co-found a brand new Code Pink chapter in Republican Orange County, CA!
